I enjoy watching the World Cup on cable tv offers with my friends at local bars. We frequently run into people from other countries who might not normally go to the bar, watching the game there. The interaction with people of different cultures contributes to some lively conversations and sometimes some friendly wagers on the games. I myself am looking forward to seeing how the U.S. does against England, as it is a benchmarking game for us. Playing against one of the world powers in soccer is something that helps the entire team gain confidence if they can win or keep the score close. The World Cup is similar to the Olympics, because it encourages people that might never interact on a daily basis to come together and share a common interest. That common interest is the love of the game of soccer and friendly international competition. In soccer there are no weapons of mass destruction, or threats of international violence, instead the skills of the players do the speaking for the countries.
